I grew up a lover of things and turned into a hater of things by working auctions and estate sales. Seeing the detritus of a life lived made me want to purge myself of all my earthly possessions. Being out of the industry for ten years now but still working intensely with things (historical objects), I have come to a wary peace with the stuff of life, the things. Still, I resent the need to possess things that tech has accidentally engendered in me. After purging most of my CDs and DVDs in lieu of digital access, I’ve now had to begin rebuilding the collection, as I refuse to rent or purchase from my potential technofeudal overlords or accept that more and more media is “lost” despite the ability to share it has never been greater. Worried about library cuts and book banning, I feel compelled to own books I would have otherwise borrowed. I don’t want the closets full of nothing, but I’d also like to feel secure in our collective knowledge commons.

I love that sculpture! The way the iridescent scales the name brings to mind are instead muted and fading rusted colours AHHHH! I've always thought about it as "captive snakes sometimes exhibit this behaviour when under heat stress (they can't regulate temperature well, so above 41/42 degrees C, they end up confused and their metabolism gets funky, creating a false sense of hunger) I guess we've sort of become captive to our own creations (with the rainbow snake being a creation figure and all) and now the "heat stress" is well, the consequences of our own creations. Yes this can be fossil fuels and the climate crisis for a LITERAL heat stress, but it extends to wars, capitalism shenanigans (put whatever you want in there) And then we have groups of people in power (the head) exploiting and brutalising those most vulnerable in our society, and will continue to eat their way up through groups of people, despite their own survival being largely dependant on the work of those they devour" I also just really like snakes, herpetology RULES!
